Companions come from all walks of life, some with education and work experience, some with none

Some have been rough sleeping, some have been sofa surfing or staying in hostels. Companions may be from the area or from elsewhere, hoping to make a fresh start away from difficult places and experiences.

Entry surveys conducted when someone joins an Emmaus community (UK-wide, not Bristol specific) found that:

  • 76% of companions had sleep problems
  • 32% have suicidal thoughts
  • 72% often felt unwell
  • 76% believe anxiety stopped them doing things
  • 88% felt depressed
